How can we help?
EnglishBefore you arrive
Knowing what will happen can make your visit feel easier. Here is a simple guide to the usual steps.
When you arrive at a collection centre, take a number card, scan it and take a seat.
Your phlebotomist will ask you to sit down and confirm your full name, date of birth, address and phone number.
If you have fainted before or feel worried about needles, let your phlebotomist know. They can position you comfortably and help you feel at ease.
Your phlebotomist will gather the equipment, clean their hands and put on gloves. A tourniquet will sit around your upper arm while they find the best vein.
Your skin will be cleaned with an alcohol wipe. The single-use sterile needle may feel like a small pinch or sharp sting. It may stay in place for 30 seconds to a couple of minutes, depending on the number of tubes needed.
Gauze will be held against the puncture site and you will be asked to apply pressure. Keep your arm straight until you are asked to remove your hand. The tubes will be labelled in front of you and a plaster will be applied.
